A missing tooth can have a detrimental effect on function and esthetics. The most effective way to replace a tooth is often through use of dental implants. A dental implant replaces a missing tooth root that has been removed when a tooth has been extracted. After the dental implant is firmly anchored in place, a crown, or replacement "tooth" is placed upon it, so the resulting restoration looks and feels nearly as good as the original. Dental implants have several advantages over older means of tooth replacement (fixed bridges and removable appliances) – they are the only method of preserving bone once a tooth has been lost and they reduce the need for involving adjacent teeth.
