Gum Disease and health
Gum disease is a chronic problem that requires more frequent dental cleanings and more specialized attention to keep it from progressing. Untreated, periodontal disease can lead to the deterioration of the supporting structures of your teeth.
Many studies have indicated that the most successful outcomes are the result of a team effort between the patient, the dentist and the hygienist. A program tailored to your specific health needs will help control the bacteria and the disease progression.
Most patients with gum problems will require dental hygiene care every three months to prevent the more aggressive bacteria from repopulating under the gums.
Some factors can increase your risk of more aggressive gum disease, such as diabetes, tobacco use, systemic illnesses, high sugar intake and alcohol use. In order to detect potential damage to your gums, we will monitor and measure the gum pockets, tissue quality, home hygiene effectiveness and health evaluations at each of your hygiene visits so that we can make appropriate recommendations for your care.
